That faith communities are leading the way in sustainability became evident at a formal Awards Dinner celebrating World Environment Day on 5th June. 

The conferring of environmental awards on religious groups will be a welcome change of mood after the disappointing delay in making Australian companies take responsibility for their pollution.

In an effort to address the environmental degradation and injustices cased by rising meat consumption, multi-faith network the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change has launched a “Meat-Free Day” initiative, encouraging people to avoid meat one day a week.

When the lights switched off at 8.30pm 27th March at Sydney’s Observatory Hill for Earth Hour 2010, solidarity was forged with many others across the globe for creating a more sustainable future. ‘A Vigil of Light and Hope’ was the theme for this evening of prayer, meditation, poetry and dance presented by an array of representatives from Sydney’s multi-faith community.

ARRCC held its inaugural Eco-Awards Dinner on 5th June 2010, World Environment Day to formally recognise and promote environmental achievements within faith communities.

The leaders of a diverse range of religious faiths have joined together to call on Australia’s leaders for strong action on climate change.
