This election, let's let people know what we're doing by making lots of short videos about it for social media. If you're giving out yard signs through your faith community, or putting up a banner outside your place of worship, tell everyone about it online.
Why make a video?
Whenever faith communities speak up on the climate it tends to get noticed. We don't fit the stereotype of the kind of person who cares about this crisis. Videos also happen to be the most popular and shared form of content on social media. So, short videos are a great way to help set the agenda at this election to show that this is a major issue. It also boosts the visibility of the other things you're already doing, such as giving out yard signs or putting up a banner.
What your video should contain
- Please start with someone from your faith community speaking directly to the camera.
- Please talk about the actions you're taking - either putting up a banner and/or giving out yard signs. Speak for about 30 seconds as to why you're doing this and how this relates to your faith.
- Find a way of showing a yard sign or a banner in your video, so that people see what you're doing.
- Mention one or two policies you would like to see in place after the election.
- We'd like as many as possible to say that you're against nuclear energy as it will take years and years to build when the climate crisis needs to be addressed right now.
- If you're in a Labor-Green marginal electorate please say that you want an end to all new coal and gas projects.
- Ideally your video will be about one minute long
For example, you might shoot something like "Hello, my name is .... and I'm outside xyz church / synagogue / mosque and we are giving out signs for people to put up outside their homes that call for climate action. We're doing this because our faith tells us that ...."
Who can make a video?
Anyone can make a video of this kind. If you're a religious leader, that's a bonus, but we are keen for all people of faith to be involved.
Tips on making your video
- Record on your phone. Our friends at 350 Pacific have created this video guide about how to take a great video on your phone. It’s really good! Again, if it’s a choice between shooting something or not shooting anything at all, using the camera phone to take some quick videos is the right choice every time.
- Horizontal hold. Remember to hold your camera phone horizontally for video! Think about how your TV looks - that’s one way of remembering which way to hold it.
Where to post it
Post the video on Facebook or Twitter and we will share it. If your place of worship has its own profile, please use that, otherwise post from your own personal account.
Let us know about it
Send a quick email to [email protected] and we will share your video. We will also boost some videos in a way that targets people in key electorates, perhaps even your own, if you live in one.
