6 October 2026 - Day of Action: faith communities speak with one voice

Thank you to everyone who took part in our day of action. When we began planning, we hoped to do three things, and together we have done them all.

We mobilised faith communities across the country. People of faith and faith leaders from many traditions joined in, and it was impressive to see.

We shared our message with the Australian public. National media coverage, including NBN News in Newcastle and Seven News in Cairns, showed that faith communities care about this issue, know what they are asking for, and are ready to act. In total, there were more than 150 media items with a combined reach of more than 22 million people. 

We reached the Prime Minister’s office. The statement from the Pacific Church leaders , formally presented at the opening service of Pre-COP in Fiji, was brought to the attention of the Prime Minister’s travelling party before they left for the summit. Since then, 80 senior Australian faith leaders have added their own open letter, echoing the Pacific Church leaders’ call.

More than a petition

This is more than a public statement.

The international multifaith petition is one of the campaign's principal organising tools.

Every signature begins a conversation.

Every conversation helps more people understand why a planned transition away from fossil fuels matters.

Every conversation strengthens relationships within our faith communities.

Every conversation invites someone new into the movement.

Our goal is not simply to collect signatures. Our goal is to build Australia's faith climate movement.

Join our Pacific Neighbours in prayer and reflection

On Sunday 4 October, the Fiji Council of Churches led the Ecumenical Sunday Service as part of the official Pre-COP program.

They very generously shared the Liturgy and we've kept them available for Australian faith communities to continue to join with our Pacific neighbours in prayer, meditation, and spiritual solidarity.

Why a Fossil Fuel Treaty?

The world has agreed that we need to tackle climate change — but there is still no international agreement specifically designed to manage a planned and fair transition away from coal, oil and gas.

The Paris Agreement was a historic step forward, but it does not provide a framework for coordinating the global phase-out of fossil fuels or supporting countries and communities through that transition.

A Fossil Fuel Treaty would help fill that gap: bringing countries together to plan the transition away from fossil fuels, support those most affected, and ensure that the transition is fair.

The idea originated in the Pacific, particularly through the leadership of Vanuatu and Tuvalu, and Pacific nations continue to call for stronger international action.

The call is also supported by a growing international movement. Faith communities and organisations around the world have added their voices, including GreenFaith, the World Council of Churches, the Laudato Si' Movement, Ummah for Earth and Soka Gakkai. The Vatican has also endorsed the idea of a Fossil Fuel Treaty.

As countries increasingly confront the question of how to move beyond fossil fuels, Australia's faith communities have an opportunity to stand with our Pacific neighbours and add our voices to this growing global movement.

Why Faith Communities?

Climate change is not only an environmental issue.

It is also a moral issue.

Every major faith tradition teaches compassion, justice, care for creation and responsibility towards future generations.

Faith communities are deeply woven into Australian society through places of worship, schools, charities and community organisations.

Together we have an extraordinary opportunity to help create the public support political leaders need to act with courage.

What We're Building Together

This movement is about much more than a series of events.

Together we are building:

• stronger relationships across Australia's diverse faith communities;

• deeper partnerships with Pacific communities;

• authentic partnerships with First Nations faith leaders as the movement develops;

• thousands of trusted climate conversations;

• greater confidence to speak about climate as a moral issue;

• new local leaders and organisers; and

• a larger, stronger and better-connected faith climate movement.

Over the coming months there will be many opportunities to pray, learn, organise and take public action together.

The action on 6 October is one important moment in that journey — not the end of it.

This Momentum Continues

Our work calling for a Fossil Fuel Treaty doesn't end on today.

We will continue building the constituency of people, faith leaders and faith communities who are prepared to stand with our Pacific neighbours and call for a planned, fair phase-out of fossil fuels.
