Global multifaith campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty

We are proud to be part of a new global multi-faith campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty to end the expansion of coal, oil and gas and provide a just transition for workers.

Sign the global multifaith letter

This is the main thing we're asking everyone to get behind. All over the world faith communities are signing up to show we want this global phase-out of coal, oil and gas - now. You can sign in one of three ways:

  • As a religious leader
  • As an everyday person of faith
  • As a religious institution

Sign the letter as an individual or faith leader

Help make this massive

We need as many people as possible to help spread the word about this. Can you help?

If you sign up here, you will get all the resources you need sent to you by email, including:

  • A pre-written email for you send to people you know to ask them to sign up to support the Treaty.

  • Copy for your place of worship’s newsletter or pew sheet.

  • A QR code to give people to ask them to do the same thing.
  • A paper petition for you to print and ask people to sign up. This is not our preferred option as it means you will need to go to the website and enter each person afterwards. Please use either email or the QR code above if you can. However, we recognise that for some people a paper petition may be the best option.

  • An A4 poster.

Spread the word

Sing to phase out coal and gas!

All over the country, people of faith are singing to show their support for a treaty to phase out fossil fuels.

Check out our singing page to find out how you can be part of this.

Why this Treaty matters

No mechanism currently exists to address fossil fuels and manage a fair transition away from oil, gas and coal. The Paris Agreement, while a monumental step in addressing climate change and setting up the temperature limit, isn’t structured or equipped to deal with the transition from fossil fuels. It doesn’t even mention coal, gas or oil.

International momentum for such a treaty is building with the first ever global summit for a phase-out of fossil fuels taking place in Colombia on April 28 and 29.

Faith communities around the world are uniting to show our support for a treaty of this kind. Those involved include the GreenFaith, the World Council of Churches, the Laudato Si Movement, Ummah for Earth and Soka Gakkai. The Vatican has endorsed the idea of treaty.

The idea of a treaty of this kind originated in the Pacific, particularly from Tuvalu and Vanuatu, and pressure from the Pacific for such a treaty is still high. Let's show our love for our neighbours in the Pacific by supporting their call.

The Australian Government has yet to commit to sending a delegation to the upcoming summit, even in an observer capacity. Let's make sure they hear loud and clear that faith communities in Australia want them to at least do that!
