Forest Protection Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage in threatened forest ecosystems of Gumbaynggirr Country (Mid North Coast NSW, Bellingen area).

This event is organised by the Forest Advocacy Ministry. All are welcome to attend.

Goals for the weekend

  • Support forest friends groups who are protecting forests from imminent logging.
  • Increase awareness among Christians of the importance of achieving the maximum possible protection of koala habitat, and encourage their involvement in efforts to protect habitat and end native forest logging.
  • Foster friendship between Forest Advocacy Ministry participants and forest friends.
  • Provide opportunities for spiritual connection with the earth/Earth, focusing on forests and water.
  • Invite participants to experience and reflect on ministry in the context of the destruction of forests and community efforts to protect them.

Draft program

Friday August 25:
6:30pm        Shared meal and campfire
8pm             Forest walk by torchlight

Saturday August 26:
7:30am        Breakfast
9am             Welcome to Country and yarning
10am – 5pm Forest pilgrimage*
6:30pm        Shared meal and campfire

Sunday August 27:
7:30am        Breakfast
10am-12pm “Ecofaith” outdoor gathering
12:30pm      Optional lunch at the Butter Factory

* The Saturday pilgrimage will involve walking on undulating terrain, for several hours in total, and standing up for most of the day. Driving options will be provided for those who are unable to do the walk. A light lunch will be provided.

Note: Chaplains will be available across the weekend.

Accommodation

Accommodation is camping on a property close to Bellingen, with meals provided. Basic bathroom and kitchen facilities will be available.

You are welcome to organise your own accommodation alternative if camping doesn’t suit. Local accommodation options:
