Meeting your MP before the election, workshop 2
This workshop is basically about how a group might best go about meeting with their local MP. This will be a participatory workshop.
1. We’ll briefly talk about the place of meetings with local representatives in an overall strategy. In some electorates, rather than meeting with the MP, a higher priority could be building public awareness and encouraging people to vote for the most pro-climate action candidate.
2. We’ll go through the important steps in the process of meeting with MPs, and structure some time for sharing and discussion.
Participants are asked to read this guide before the workshop. In a pre-election period, these skills are also transferrable to meetings with other candidates for office.
3. The lead-up to an election presents different opportunities and challenges to business-as-usual. Politicians are more attuned than usual to what constituents think, but it can also be harder to get a meeting because they are getting out and about.
How might a person make the most of opportunities to talk with the MP when it's only possible to grab a few minutes at the railway station or at a shopping mall? We plan to structure some time for participants to begin preparing what they might specifically say.
This is the second of two identical workshops (the first one is Wednesday 9th Feb 1.30 pm AEDT):
