SS4C Sydney description of event

In line with the Global #ClimateStrike, the Sydney SS4C will mobilise thousands to demand climate justice.
On March 3, students, workers, teachers, parents and grandparents will take to the streets of Sydney as a part of the Global #ClimateStrike! We say #WeWon’tSettle as communities, workers, young people and marginalised groups are exploited by our Governments choice to put profit before us.

On top of this we demand:
❌ | No new coal, oil and gas, including the Narrabri Coal Seam Gas Project and the Kurri Kurri Gas Plant.
♻️| 100% public renewable energy and exports by 2030.
💰 | Funding for a just transition and jobs for fossil fuel workers & their communities.
📊 | Real carbon cuts, not offsets.
✊| Resource First Nations-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for Country.

The climate crisis has not disappeared with the defeat of Scott Morrison’s government. 2022 was a year of climate breakdown. Floods left one third of Pakistan submerged, Europe experienced what one researcher described as the worst drought in 500 years and Hurricane Ian devastated parts of the U.S. and Cuba. The State of the Climate report found changes to weather and climate extremes are happening at an increased pace across Australia- the disastrous floods in the Kimberley are just the latest example.
We need to demand more. The Albanese Government’s current 43 per cent target is inadequate and relies on an emissions trading scheme that allows polluters to buy their way out of reducing emissions. Alarmingly, the government is also supporting a series of major new fossil fuel projects like the Scarborough gas project in WA, the Middle Arm gas hub in the NT and the Santos Narrabri Pilliga Gas Project in NSW. This will make it nearly impossible for the government to meet its own target. Opposition from Indigenous people such as the Gomeroi to the destruction of their lands is being ignored.
