School Strike Sydney

ARRCC stands with today's young people as they fight for intergenerational justice. We'd love you to join us under the ARRCC banner at this event.

The message below is about the Sydney Strike. ARRCC supporters are invited to meet at the ARRCC banner near the North-East corner of Belmore Park on 17th Nov, on the corner of Hay St and Castlereagh St.

Dear friends

Join us at Belmore Park in Sydney on November 17th to fight for our futures!

“The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived… the level of fossil fuel profits and climate inaction is unacceptable” -  United Nations Secretary General.

2030 is fast approaching, and yet we have seen little action from the government to protect us against climate catastrophe. They say that they care for our futures, but have only proposed a vague net zero by 2050 target and approved 5 new coal mines this year, all while greenwashing us with the ineffective Safeguard Mechanism. This is not good enough. The government has shown us time and time again that they cannot be trusted with our futures, and will continually disregard scientists and ignore the dangerous (but avoidable) effects of climate change.

Our demands:

  • Net zero by 2030 - which means no new fossil fuel projects, extensions or expansions
  • 100% public renewable energy generation and exports by 2030
  • Funding for a just transition and jobs for fossil fuel workers and their communities

Net zero by 2030 is ambitious, but it is a necessary step to ensure the safety of our future. Even at an ideal goal of 1.5 degrees warming, we will still face consequences such as more extreme weather events, sea level rise, food shortages, and loss of up to 90% of the world’s coral reefs. At 1.6 degrees- which we will surely reach if the government does not take urgent action- the consequences are greater, such as Greenland’s ice caps reaching a tipping point and melting completely, which, according to NASA, would cause sea levels to rise by 7m and flood countries across the world.

This is why we need you to strike with us on November 17th at Belmore Park at 12pm!

By striking together with thousands of passionate students, we are telling the government that they must take radical and urgent action. They must commit to net zero by 2030. They must invest in renewable energy, and they must provide a just transition for all fossil fuel workers. They must be held accountable to act now, for the window is rapidly closing to avoid a climate catastrophe. We do not have time to listen to their excuses!

We look forward to striking with you, Thea!

In solidarity,

Min (she/her) and Michaela (she/her)
